Aberdeen Combs at the Philadelphia Exhibition
We are very pleased to learn that one of our most important local Industries, comb-making has received favourable notice at the Philadelphia exhibition, Mr. C.G Elrick, Rosemount Comb Works, having been awarded the only prize medal that has been granted for horn combs. It is only about a dozen years since Mr Elrick began manufacturing. He commenced by making India-rubber combs, chains, ear rings etc in Loch Street, and since then his business has rapidly increased. Owing, however, to the unhealthy competition of foreign manufacturers, the India-rubber comb trade has been almost dragged out of our local manufacturers hands, but it is gratifying to learn that we not only hold our own in horn goods, but far surpass in quality and cheapness anything that can be produced elsewhere. We believe it is only about three years since Mr Elrick turned his attention to the horn combs, and with what success the present award testifies. Some years ago the extension of his business obliged Mr Elrick to remove to Rosemount, where he has now over 400 hands fully occupied. We trust for the sake of the working community that his enterprise will continue to meet with the success it deserves.
