The Aberdeen Combworks Company Limited is the oldest comb making firm in Great Britain, having been in existence over 140 years. The basic material for combs in use at that time was horn, and skilled craftsmen still fashion articles in horn today, although the supply of that material is rapidly diminishing.

As other articles were added to their range of goods, the need for a coloured material was felt, and early in the century they produced their own non-inflammable plastic material from casein which is known as keronyx, in an infinite variety of colours, and which is most suitable for the manu- facture of combs and other articles.

In 1937 the company installed an injection moulding plant and are one of the pioneers in this field of plastics. The trade name of “Nuroid” has become well – known all over the world to merchants handling plastic goods. Injection moulded goods have a very high finish and beautiful colours—plain, mottled, opaque, trans- parent and translucent.

The company produces a large variety of articles including egg spoons, egg cups, egg containers, wall tiles and pill boxes, and recently have gone into the toy trade with a child’s tea set. So extensive is the company’s range that it has more than 10,000 patterns of articles made for its various markets in all parts of the world. Special types of combs are made for particular markets, such as West Africa and India.
